Published in two volumes. Contemporary dark green cloth binding with labels on spine and titles in gilt. Engraved frontispiece to each volume and one plate in text. Complete.

Vol.I: xxii + 334pp. Binding solid, internally clean with a single "Sons of England Patriotic & Benevolent Society Historical Research Committee" rubber stamp on the front end paper and one on the rear end paper. Bookplate on front paste down.

Vol.II: xii + 358pp. Binding solid, internally clean with two "Sons of England Patriotic & Benevolent Society Historical Research Committee" rubber stamps on the front endpapers and also on the two rear endpapers. Bookplate on front paste down.

The author was in Cape Town from April 8 to May 3, 1830. 'Mr. Stewart was entertained by the Governor, Lieut.-Gen. Sir G. Lowry Cole, whom he describes as "an able and popular ruler, of commanding figure, and plain and unaffected manners." There is an interesting account of a visit paid to Constantia.' - Mendelssohn Vol.II, page 436

Apart from the interesting passages relating to the author's visit to the Cape, this is also one of the important early ethnographic accounts of Hawaii, with detailed descriptions of life and customs. 

The British first edition is uncommon.
