Those with samples of the way the author wrote his name will be able to determine whether or not the pen name on the title page was written by De Saint Pierre himself. The few pen and pencil notes in the text were made by two different people. Jacques-Henri Bernadin de Saint Pierre was born on 19 January 1737 and died on 21 January 1814. He was a well known French literary character who first published this book in French in 1773. The first English tranlation was published in 1775 under the title "A Voyage to the Island of Mauritius...etc." This tranlation, published in 1800, is a new and re-worked version of the 1775 edition. The binding is late 19th Century in brown calf leather, gilt titling on a black title panel, gilt decorations, five raised bands, marbled paper boards with leather corners. The end papers look newer than the text pages. xxiv prelims, 334 text pages. CONDITION DETAILS: The foxing throughout this book ranges from fairly light to heavy.
