Map of the route adopted by Captains Speke & Grant,
on their journey across Africa from Zanzibar to the Mediterranean
by A. Keith Johnston 1864.
John Augustus Grant and Captain John Hanning Speke left Zanzibar in 1860
to seek the source of the Nile. They successfully reached Gondokoro, in Southern
Sudan in 1863. Grant wrote this account of their journey, focusing particularly
on matters not included in Speke's Geographical & Botanical account.
"A monumental work of exploration, this represents Grant's experiences traveling
with John Hanning Speke from Zanzibar to the source of the Nile at Lake Victoria,
naming Ripon Falls, then trekking down river to the Mediterranean Sea. There are
numerous descriptions of the terrain and people, with sporting incidents throughout,
particularly after various antelope species, zebra, and an occasional buffalo. North of
the lake in Unyoro, Grant hunted elephant but failed to collect one. The pair eventually
met Samuel Baker who was camped along the river. (Czech, An Annotated Bibliography
of African Big Game Hunting Books, 1785 to 1950, p. 66).
