First edition: 98 pages, contemporary cloth binding, which is stained and very worn, foxing throughout, working loose at the front hinge, book binder’s ticket – B.de Roos, Church Street, Cape Town on the front paste down end paper, a good copy.
Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography, volume 1, page 538 -539: Captain Fawcett was evidently a very religious and earnest man, and during his short residence in the Cape did his best to place himself in touch with the spiritual affairs of the country. He soon became on intimate terms with Dr. Philip, of whom he remarks : " If he had gained my heart by what I saw of him in the pulpit, this was more confirmed by the fascination of personal and private intercourse. I found him a man of large and enlightened views. . . ."
The author visited most of the towns and villages of the Cape Colony, and while making a few remarks on the general state of the country and its inhabitants, the majority of his notes have reference to the religious position of the natives and the rest of the population....
An example of early Cape Town printing.
