The playing surface shows an outside of the lower half of the continent of Africa with the title at the top, a scale map of England and Wales in the lower right corner and a miles scale at the bottom. The game is a race following a path coloured blue and then changing to red; the moves are denoted by circles, some of which are white while others are red or blue. The red to blue circles indicate forfeits and reward squares and the instructions are contained in a separate booklet. Also shown are illustrations of animals and events from Livingstone's travels together with the names of towns and areas. Rules of play are pasted to the inside of the lid.
