ADDRESS DELIVERED BY GENERAL THE RIGHT HON. J.C. SMUTS, P.C., M.L.A.

Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa, on Monday, November 3rd 1919 in the Town Hall, Johannesburg, at a Reception given in his honour by the Jewish Community of South Africa, Under the Auspices of the South African Zionist Federation and the South African Jewish Board of Deputies.

18 pages, 180 x 120 mm, printed blue paper wrappers, addressed to S.S. Fisch, Esq., on the back cover and with a postmark dated Johannesburg, 4 March 1920.

‘Ladies and gentlemen, I wish to thank you most heartily for this beautiful address which been presented to me on behalf of the South African Zionist Federation and the South African Jewish Board of Deputies. The terms of the address are far more that I deserve, but I accept the address even in its extravagant terms, as a token of the goodwill which you have towards me, I feel as if in am in a family party tonight …….

(Smuts concludes)…and that you will become more and more knit into our whole body politic and our whole social structure, and that no one will look upon the Jews as an alien population, but really as an integral portion of the white people in South Africa; I trust that whilst you retain your national identity, your Jewish identity, you will become the very best of South Africans, and that in that way you will help us to build up that greater South Africa, that more united South Africa, that more prosperous and happier South Africa, to which we all look forward.
