How it works

Register

Later early eighteenth century binding. Front and rear panels loose.

368pp. Internally clean with occasional contemporary marginalia.

The printer Froben's device on title page and final leaf. This device was designed by Hans Holbein. Froben was a leading humanist and close friend of Erasmus. After his death his son and grandson continued the business. The publication of this volume falls in the period of his son's management. Before the Renaissance the Church prohibited the learning of Greek, as anything written before the Christian era was considered pagan. The humanists realised that the works of the early Greek scholars contained valuable information and accounts, and knowledge of Greek was therefore required, and acquired clandestinely. Here is an original example of a Greek text printed in the Renaissance.

According to the introduction this work was published to help students in Greek. It contains Aesop's fables and a few other works. Greek text with Latin translation on the facing page.

Front and rear panels detached but the original text block is in very good condition.
