Binding solid. Boards clean and unmarked. Former owner's name and Malawi address on front endpaper. Light foxing. 

An added bonus is the original jacket, unfortunately covered in adhesive plastic so with no collectable value, but quite useful as it is complete and preserves the original blurb on the front flap, which is as follows:

'Mr. Maugham, whose former books on Zambesia are well known, has had a long and distinguished career in Africa, as administrator, consul and sportsman. In this book he tells of his early days in Nyasaland, in Portuguese East Africa, at Chinde and Lourenco Marques, and afterwards on the West Coast, including the remarkable state of Liberia, that entirely coloured community where life is carried on, if not efficiently, at any rate not without humour. Mr. Maugham has had dealing with men of all sorts from governors-general to cannibal chiefs. Much that he writes of is now of real historic interest as changed and more civilized conditions make such experiences impossible in the future. The account given here of the work that Britain has done and is doing in Central Africa will make Imperialists proud.'

'A British administrator in the region, Maugham describes the area listed in the subtitle as well as early conflicts to eradicate slavery. There is only a brief mention of his sporting exploits, primarily after impala, eland and sable in the plains region below Zomba in Nyasaland. There is also a good description of natives hunting hippo.'
