19 issues (the set lacks Volume 5, Number 4 and Volume 6, Number 1), each 128 pages, 8vo (215 x 140 mm), original pictorial paper wrappers (paperback), some covers lightly rubbed but overall a good set.
Ronald Segal, born into a wealthy Cape Town family, was a left-wing activist, author and publishing visionary. In 1956, he was only 24 when he launched Africa South - a quarterly publication that combined a critique of apartheid, substantial investigative journalism, coverage of events elsewhere in Africa and internationally - which he edited managed and distributed. After Segal's flight into exile, the journal continued for a couple of years as Africa South in Exile. Segal later founded the Penguin African Library. Africa South was non-sectarian, carrying articles by liberals, socialists, academics and journalists across a broad political spectrum; it provided thoughtful, forthright and outspoken commentary; although it is best remembered for its opposition to National Party rule in South Africa, it was strikingly alert to currents and topics beyond the country. The magazine's extraordinary range (and historical importance) is indicated by the 260 contributors to its 21 volumes, a roll-call that can only be hinted at here. South African authors (in alphabetical order) included Hilda Bernstein, Anthony Delius, Patrick Duncan, Ruth First, Helen Joseph, Nelson Mandela, Z. K. Matthews,  Fatima Meer, Alan Paton, Jack Simons, Walter Sisulu and Can Themba; Segal solicited articles from African thinkers and activists including  Hastings Banda, Kenneth Kaunda, Tom Mboya, Joshuah Nkomo and Julius Nyerere; the journal also carried articles by politicians and writers including Barbara Castle, G. D. H. Cole, Basil Davidson, Thomas Hodgkin, Colin Legum, Thomas Pakenham and Terence Ranger.
Volume 1, Number 1, to Volume 4, Number 3, published in Cape Town. Volume 4, Number 4, to Volume 5, Number 3, AFRICA SOUTH, In Exile, published in London.
