This copy is from the library of Major-General E.B.Hawkins and remained in his family for more than a century. The first owner was Herbert Eden Hawkins, who received this book for Christmas from his parents in 1866 and was killed in the Matabele War - see image of hand written note.
Original green cloth binding with gilt titling on the spine and a gilt decorative device on the upper board with a blind stamped decorative border. Dark brown end papers. x prelims, 451 pages, 48 illustrations including the frontis and the fold out map of South Africa, 6 of the full page plates are colour tinted, followed by 32 pages of the publisher's advertisements.
CONDITION DETAILS: Although the binding looks good, the contents of the book are coming loose, and several pages are loosely inserted. The fold out map has several creases and a large closed tear. Unfortunately the frontis piece and the colour tinted plates have chipped edges and stain marks: See the images provided. There is a bit of foxing, staining and soiling throughout.
