xi, 170 pages, [60] pages of plates: illustrations, portraits, plans, map. Quarto. Cloth, dust wrapper frayed along edges with small chips to edges of spine.

Walton spent eight years researching the material for this book and it represents one of the first attempts to look at indigenous building traditions in southern Africa. Walton deals with the period up until European influence began to alter the "established pattern of life". Walton's fascination with vernacular architecture would lead him to write more books on this subject.
