Hackett (R.G.) South African War Books, An Illustrated Bibliography, page 66, ‘A campaign diary compiled by a volunteer in K company 2nd Seaforth Highlanders. During an active campaign from March 1900 to Feb. 1901 the volunteers made wide ranging moves in the Orange Free State. At various times they were at Frankfort and Heilbron in the north and Jagersfontein and Rouxville to the south. The corps experienced little fighting throughout but took part in the battle for Retiefs Nek on July 24. In all engagements losses were light. For a brief period in August/September 1900 the Seaforths were left to garrison Heilbron. At other times they were employed in escorting convoys. The writer gives a disturbing account of the evacuation of Jagersfontein on Christmas day 1900 and of a farm burning mission in the Zastron area in January 1901. Shortly thereafter he was taken ill with enteric fever and removed to hospital in Aliwal North prior to being shipped home. A list of officers and men of K (Volunteer) Company 2nd Seaforths is appended.’
