Lot of three original postcard letters, two issued during the war. (1) Letter written in English, on a card featuring Ragama Camp in Ceylon, from Boer POW Hubert Potgieter to an unknown female acquaintance. Undated (c. 1900-01), the 13x9cm card carries no stamps and appears to have been trimmed to fit in an envelope with other correspondence. Some excerpts  from his communique; "We are very well in this camp. There are 87 men...; Here is so much to interest one. The manners and customs of these  Eastern people are so totally different to what we are used to in South Africa. I think I will be here for some considerable time...". Hubert Potgieter hailed from Wepener Town, was captured at Fouriesburg on 30 July, 1900, and served at Diyatalawa Camp. (2) Postcard letter in Dutch from 'Sannie' to Miss A (Annie) Birkenstock dated and mailed on 8 April 1902 at a Burgher Camp, Pietermaritzburg to Thornybush (9 April). The card features a triangular "Passed, Censor, Burgher Camp, Pietermaritzburg" stamp. (3) Post card to Annie Birkenstock, Hlobane, Vrijheid, Transvaal, stamped at Greyton (25 December 1902) and Pietermaritzburg (24 December). The card features photos of Naval Gun at Ladysmith during Siege, Native Kraal, Natal and Transport Wagon, Natal and wishes Birkenstock a "Plezierige kerstfeest en Nuwejaar". See LOT 444.
