Hand-written diary in an Army Hospital Diary (Army Book R3), 155 pages, brown cloth.
Anderson was a medic and stretcher-bearer. He enlisted at Winchester in March 1900. He served mainly in the Orange Free State with an infantry column & saw a great deal of action. At the battle of Biddulphsberg in May 1900 he witnessed a number of Guardsmen being burnt to death in a veldfire: "[T]hat night ... we had 8 of our men out under the hill where they had collected a number of dead & wounded men. It was an awful night for we had frequently to go out and beat out the grass to save our own camp being destroyed and also had the wounded to attend to. I shall never forget the day & night and never wish to see anything like it again." According to information supplied by his family, Anderson was killed in action on the 31st March 1901, and at that point the diary ends rather dramatically in mid-sentence.
