German born Arnold Wilhelm Spilhaus came to South Africa in 1869. He spent two years investigating the possibilities of trading along the Natal and Mozambique coasts. As part of this venture he also explored the Zambezi River. Spilhaus collected plants which were sent to the Labeck Museum in German. Spilhaus founded the firm Spilhaus & Co in 1876 trading mostly in hides and wood and in later decades in agricultural machinery, he was also an early patron of South African Art. He died in Cape Town at the age of 100.
In the book he describes his travels and memoirs of his time in South Africa and Europe.
