'May the spirit of the lowly burro enrich your life with simple kindness'. Wm. G. Long (Supreme Court Judge, Retired).
EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED BOOK, published 1969-- "ASSES vs. JACKASSES' is William G. Long's historical account of burros, donkey & jackasses and his unusual, humorous legal petition for animal rights, PLUS TIPPED-IN PHOTOS & RECOLLECTIONS of the NATURAL WORLD at a 1940s HUNTING LODGE in Oregon's CASCADE MOUNTAINS. Published by Criterion; distributed by Touchstone Press. Drawings by Maryann Carruthers Akin.
Judge Long wrote his book as a 'labor of love'-- motivated in part by his "life-time experiences with human jackasses" in divorce and juvenile court cases. Upon retirement, the judge and his wife travelled over the historical donkey trails in Western U.S. and while travelling they researched national libraries to learn about the 6,000 years of service given to humanity by burros, donkeys and jackasses.
Judge Long gave this copy to a friend, ELMER G. SILL, creator of HARMONY LODGE. It was Sill's idea to make a lean-to shelter from which friends could fish and hunt-- Sill located a good site in the Cascades along Stevens Pass Highway; he built Harmony Lodge with help of unemployed carpenters, plumbers and other craftsmen in the Depression years of early 1930s. In 1938, Harmony Lodge was finished and dedicated.
E.G. SILL tipped-in 1940s memorabilia & (12) annotated photos-- a Surprise Donkey Party in 1940 with presentation of the burro, Cleopatra/ Cleopatra & Mark Anthony in 'corral of romance'/ Cleo & two day-old son, Caesar/ Nature at Harmony Lodge/ Maternity hospital for burros & donkeys/ The lodge's hand-drawn land plot/ Photos of gentlemen visitors at Harmony Lodge/ Photos of the lodge's own jackass, Cleopatra/ Original birth announcement-drawing in 1945 for 'Little Caesar' (donkey son of Cleopatra & Mark Anthony)/ Obituary ('the curtain falls') announcing Cleopatra's death on Dec.7, 1948. Sill tipped-in remembrances of the lodge in back of his book-- about land purchase he made, his friendship with Judge Long, 'distinguished gentlemen' invited to the lodge, their idea to gift him a donkey named Cleopatra, and fold-out map of site.
Very good condition-- 7.25"x 8.5", oblong 12mo., 134 pp. Domestic s&h $15.
