George Steiner is a well-known literary critic, philosopher, and author. "Bluebeard's Castle: A Book of Structural Semiotics" was published in 1971 and is a study of the opera "Bluebeard's Castle" by Béla Bartók, which Steiner interprets as a work that reflects on the nature of language and meaning. "Language and Silence: Essays on Language, Literature, and the Inhuman" was first published in 1967 and deals with the relationship between language, literature, and culture. "Tolstoy or Dostoevsky: An Essay in the Old Criticism" published in 1959, is a literary criticism book in which Steiner compares the two great Russian novelists and their differing philosophies. "Extraterritorial: Papers on Literature and the Language Revolution" was published in 1972, this book is a collection of essays that address the themes of language, literature, and culture. These books were inscribed to Elizabeth Hall, who was the editor of Psychology Today at that time, by George Steiner.
