Interesting 2pp. autograph letter signed by Sir Lionel Phillips to "Dear Professor Myers" on a Vergelegen letterhead dated 16.12.29. On a single leaf 23 x 18cms. Circa 200 words. Concerning a. Recently discovered family connections in England "I knew my mother's sisters as a boy but left home before i was of age, coming to South Africa in 1875. So I have lost sight of their families. It was nine years before I went back to England,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Nine years between the ages of 20 and 30 is a huge gap & especially so, when one has lived in a new country n the pioneering stage of development, and ones ideas have been entirely remodelled." b. An operation the recipient has recently had "I have had much acquaintance with the surgteon's knife in major and minor operations and where that side of medical skill serves it is a practical certainly. Medicines are generally empirical."
A nice letter in very good condition.
Sir Lionel Phillips, 1st Baronet (6 August 1855 – 2 July 1936) was a British-born South African financier, mining magnate and politician. He first lived in Hohenheim, the first mansion built in Parktown, designed by Frank Emley in 1892, and later became the home of Sir Percy FitzPatrick, author and mining financier. In 1909, the family moved to Villa Arcadia. Finally he bought the farm Vergelegen, originally developed by Willem Adrian Van Der Stel.
