There is an introductory chapter by Sir Harry Johnstone who was once an H. M
Commissioner for Northern Rhodesia. The book is about the origins, laws, riddles and
songs of the Barotse. It has an image of the late paramount chief of the Barotse nation,
Lewanika and a skull of an ancient North Rhodesian type of man referred to as the
Homorhodesiens (photograph by Dr Smith Woodward). The illustrations of the
genealogical descent of the royal blood family and a map of Portuguese West Africa are
also included in the book.
