In the main part of the book the authors describe twelve major battles in close detail, with new maps and diagrams illustrating the text in addition to a fine selection of photographs and drawings by war artists. The accounts of the battles are preceded by a concise background to the war which explains its causes and summarizes the arms, equipment, organization, and strategic and tactical aims of the Union and Confederate armies.
