The brown paper wrappers of both books are brittle with age. The upper one of No. 2 is detached. The leaves of both have not been slit apart which indicates that neither copy has ever been read. 38 and 85 pages stapled together.
Theal long sought the Governor van Plettenberg's Journal - both in the Cape Town archives and at the Hague. One day a clerk in the Public Works Department mentioned to Theal that there were a lot of old documents in a room in his building. One of the first things Theal found upon entering the room was the precious Journal. The documents recorded are shown on upper wrappers and on the title pages.
