Herbert Watkins-Pitchford was brought to Natal by the Natal Government in 1895. As Director of the Allerton Laboratory in Natal he pioneered research into the causes and control of maladies affecting horses and cattle, including rinderpest, horse-sickness and East Coast Fever. He survived the siege of Ladysmith. This book comes from letter written to his wife during the siege, started at The Camp, Ladysmith, Friday Octr. 27th 1899 and finished 1st March 1900. The book was compiled from the original letters held by his daughter. Endpapers show a map of the Attack on the Platrand, Jan 6th 1900 with key. There are photographed pages from the original letter and a copy of special Natal Field Force Order headlines. Pages 1-129. Dust jacket rubbed on folds and top edge worn in places, some slight fading. Price clipped inside front fold. Green paper covered boards with gilt cannon design on front cover and gilt title on spine. Crease across the front cover at the top corner, not repeated on the paste-down inside front endpaper. Book clean and tightly bound.
