“This facsimile edition of the Gutenberg Bible has been published in the year 1961 by pageant books, Inc. of Paterson, New Jersey and New York City, USA. This is the first Gutenberg facsimile ever printed in the United States and only the second in the world.“  Colophon. 

The Gutenberg Bible. A new facsimile edition of the famous Keystone of Western printing presented in its original size with the illumination reproduced in full color and gold. Paterson, New Jersey: Pageant Books Inc. 1961.

Limited to 1000 copies, unnumbered.  Color reproduction of the Gutenberg Bible,  2 hardcover folio books bound in red canvas with gilt titles on spines & blind stamped covers,  and speckled page edges; each volume is housed in a similarly bound folding cases. 

Laid-in is a Prospectus for the publication, with full size facsimile page, issued in 1960.

A celebrated Herculean production, meticulously designed and executed.  

Condition is Very Good.  Cases show signs of shelf wear, spine corners splitting a bit, dust soiling and sunning or fading.  Books are about fine, one shows faint spotting to covers. See images.

2 volumes (18 x 12.5 in.), [648]; [634] pp.; wine colored pebbled cloth. Text pages printed on 100 percent rag content paper.

The prospectus provides a history of the Gutenberg Bible as well as details about the creation of this facsimile. The brochure was written and designed by John S. Blay.

“ The pageant Gutenberg Bible is in two volumes, volume one contains 648 pages, volume to 634. Page size is approximate 12 x 18 1/2“ and margins are wide. The paper is off-white, 90 pound, 100% rag Contant stock made especially for this addition by the Curtiss paper company. It has a lead finish and it’s smooth enough to take quality gravure printing. 

“To make the Pageant Bible an outstanding book, as close to the original as possible, two printing processes are employed. The 93 illuminated pages are being done by five color process, sheet fed gravure, to assure true and careful reproduction of the many subtle colors on the original leaves. Gold is widely used, and is protected from discoloration by an undercoat and an overcoat of lacquer.”
