First Edition hardcover Quarto, bound in black cloth boards with gilt titles to the spines. Head/heels are bumped and there is minor rubbing to the boards and minor wear to the edges and corners of all volumes.

Volume 1 has a black and white frontispiece of Sir Frederick John Jackson with a tissue guard. Illustrated with 24 colour plates reproduced from paintings by George Lodge and many black and white figures drawn by famed Danish naturalist Henrick Grönvold, whilst volume 3 has a large colour foldout-map which is in excellent condition.

Sir Frederick John Jackson (1860 - 1929) spent over thirty years in Eastern Africa, eventually serving as the Governor of Uganda.

The specimens and notes used to complete this book (which was published posthumously) were collected during the late 1800s. Previous owner's Ex-libris bookplates in each volume and has some minor foxing throughout.

Overall the bindings of the books are clean tight, a very good set of this monumental work.
