First Edition Set. 

Vol. I: x,756pp., with frontispiece, 10 plates and folding map of the Congo at rear; vol II: viii,632pp., colour frontis., 2 colour plates, 19 black and white plates; vol. III: 822pp., 24 plates: vol IV: x,846pp., 27 plates. All volumes with in-text black and white figures.

Very Good. Pages age-toned especially that of volume 1. Neatly recased in half leather with new end papers, raised bands with gilt titles on red inlays.

Published in 4 parts over a period of 21 yrs. Chapin went to the Belgian Congo, today Democratic Republic of the Congo, in 1909 at the age of 18 where he remained until the outbreak of WWI.

This work deals with the field research Chapin performed with Herbert Lang in the Congo from 1909 to 1915.

On his return to New York, he resumed his studies and then produced the present work. Mengel 26: "one of the most thoroughly prepared and notable faunal works in the literature of ornithology and an indispensable work on African birds."
