Mendelssohn (Sidney) South African Bibliography Volume II page 423: When this volume was published, the author had only been in South Africa for three years but he gives some interesting information respecting the sub-continent, its wars, politics and history, together with some observations on the Zulu War and the first annexation of the Transvaal.'

Dictionary of South African Biography volume 1 page 278 -279: At the time of the Zulu War Statham was editor of the Natal Witness in Pietermaritzburg in which position he acted very independently - so much so that he clashed with the owner of the paper who feared for his commercial interests. Blacks, Boers and British is a book remarkable for the progressive political concepts expounded in it.
