An account of conditions in South Africa before the 1881 Transvaal War. As a former editor of the Natal Witness (1877-1879), the writer shows real insight when discussing the aspirations of Blacks, Boers and British. It is possible that if his criticism of the Colonial Office in London had been seriously considered, the Boer War might have been avoided. Pages [i-vii]viii pp 1-271 At the back of the book is a 48-page Macmillan and Co's Catalogue (dated February 1881) of works in History, Biography, Travels, Critical and Literary Essays, Politics, Political and Social Economy, Law etc., and Works connected with Language. No dust jacket. Blue cloth-covered boards with gilt title on front and spine Rubbing marks on corners of cover and spine is discoloured, with small tears at top, bottom and lower side. Front and back endpapers cracked at spine, but binding is firm. Some owners' signatures on ffe and title page. Foxing on ffe and title page, and on the catalogue pages.
