Sheet containing pass words for Boer soldiers during the Siege of Ladysmith.
"De vroegere wachtwoorden zijn in handen van de vyand gevallen en zal dus voortaan niet meer gebruikt worden" (The earlier passwords fell into the hands of the enemy and shall henceforth not be used anymore).
A list of new daily passwords started on 14 January and runs to the end of the month.
Passwords on this list include Transvaal, Vrystaat, Natal and names of persons and towns. The password for the last day of January is stated as "by die huis" (at home).
Comes with an unrelated fragment (12.5×10cm) described on verso as "Rantsoene voor een persoon vrouwekamp" (Rations for one person Women's Camp). Rations listed include flour, salt, sugar and coffee.
