THE BOER WAR, A BOMBADIERS MEMOIRS:

Boer War Diaries 1900-1902 of No 18405 Bombadier Walter Mitton- 39th Royal Field Artillery.

Paperback format with blue and white card cover.

Walter Mitton was born in Burton-upon-Trent in Staffordshire in September 1877, one of thirteen children of Edwin and Maria Mitton.

His family ran a large plastering business in the town carrying out very intricate work on some of the many country houses in Staffordshire and the surrounding counties.

Walter was one of two sons who did not go into the family business, the other being his younger brother Frank, who went into the church, was a missionary in Africa, and then Cann at Bury St. Edmunds.

When Walter left school, he went to work as a sign writer at Harrad's Coach Builders in the town. When he was seventeen he ran away to join the army and went to Lichfield to sign on. He signed on with the Staffordshire Regiment, becoming a bugler. His father disapproved and bought him out of the Army after less than a years service.

Walter was not to be stopped however, and waited for his eighteenth birthday and went off again, leaving a letter asking to be left in the Army this time. He joined the Royal Field Artillery, in whose service he would stay for the next twenty-two and a half years. The story of his service in the Anglo-Boer War is recorded here.
