Text consists of biographical notes on verso facing portraits, starting on verso of first leaf with description of Field Marshall Lord Roberts.
Two variants of this booklet are known, this one being the one where the recto of the first leaf contains the title and not advertisements.
Above each portrait is an interesting one-line tobacco advertisement. Examples include: ' "Capstan" (Navy Cut) tobacco for the pipe is cool and sweet (above the portrait of Lord Kitchener of Khartoum). 'During the Siege of Ladysmith the price of "Capstan" tobacco was £3 per quarter lb. tin (above the portrait of Lieut.-General Sir George White). 'The "Three Castles" cigarettes are sweet and delicate in flavour (above portrait of Lieut.-General Sir Leslie Rundle), etc.
Gift inscription on title page "Gen. Laynton? from R. Mason". Internally clean and in very good condition. Paper covered boards have some age-associated wear.
