British Printed Papers tells the story of how GPO postal services developed when handling mail that was usually separated from letters, postcards and parcels. Some types of other mail might include newspapers or books, parliamentary papers and votes, franking privilege of Members of Parliament, patterns and samples. election papers, notices of objection to names of voters, ecclesiastical papers, and others. Members of the armed services needed special arrangements, the weather affected transmission and delivery of mails, arrangements were made to return undelivered mail, plantation accounts, writs and deeds, bills of exchange and other documents were the subject of specific measures.
This story goes back to the mid-seventeenth century to give readers the context in which very many changes to Britain's postal arrangements were made during the period 1836 to 1840.
The origin of various postal services are described. Problems encountered by the Post Office are identified together with the steps taken to resolve those. The narrative includes extracts from official records and statutes. These are augmented by Tables of the rates of postage within Britain and from Britain to places overseas.
