Although bibliographical information about the varying states of this work is scant, this is the presumed second edition and much enlarged edition of this work published in 1953, as referred to in 'Walter Battiss - Gentle Anarchist' - the catalogue of the Battiss exhibition at the Standard Bank in 2006. Enclosed in about identical illustrated wraps as the first edition, but with a somewhat different title page not mentioniong Portfolio Number One. This edition comprises an inner folder containing 13 pages of text and 42 numbered loose leaf pages, most with tipped in plates and some with printed text and illustrations. In this copy the tipped in plates are all hand titled in pencil on the mount, very possibly in Battiss's hand. There are two extra plates: The first plate is of Bushman figures in orange on opaque Japon like paper, untitled but signed by Battiss in pencil on the margin. The second plate is a photograph "Rock Painting from 'Glen Rosa', Zastron district, Orange Free State with this title printed. It would appear that this enlarged edition is the less common state.
A very good copy. The original wraps still have the glassine cover which is somewhat frayed. The spine of the cover has splits of the lower 6cms. The contents are all fine and unmarked.
