Bill Crabtree was born in Yorkshire, England. Leaving England in 1938 he arrived in Southern Rhodesia where he became a mounted trouper in the British South Africa police.

He served in World War II, during which he served as a Commissioned Officer to the British Army seeing service in a number of theatres.

After the war he resumed police duties in Rhodesia where as Officer Commanding Special Branch and Deputy Director of the Rhodesian Special Branch and Deputy Director of the Rhodesian Central Intelligence Organisation, later Deputy Commissioner of Police, he was involved in liaison with other security services in combatting the rise of armed insurrection orchestrated by external forces.
