He next accompanied Sir George Clerk as commander of a mounted escort to Bloemfontein, to arrange for the withdrawal of the British from the Orange River Sovereignty. He describes the capital of the later Orange Free State 'As desolate a place as it is possible to imagine'. He describes many hunting trips and the hardships suffered by game during periods of continuous drought.
