Dictionary of South African Biography vol. 3 pages 544-5:Arriving in South Africa in 1850, Lucas joined the Cape Mounted Rifles and took part in the Eighth Frontier War of 1850-53. He next accompanied Sir George Clerk as commander of a mounted escort to Bloemfontein, to arrange for the withdrawal of the British from the Orange River Sovereignty. He describes the capital of the later Orange Free State 'As desolate a place as it is possible to imagine'. He describes many hunting trips and the hardships suffered by game during periods of continuous drought.
