Dictionary of South African Biography vol. 3 pages 544-5: Arriving in South Africa in 1850, Lucas joined the Cape Mounted Rifles and took part in the Eighth Frontier War of 1850-53. He next accompanied Sir George Clerk as commander of a mounted escort to Bloemfontein, to arrange for the withdrawal of the British from the Orange River Sovereignty. He describes the capital of the later Orange Free State 'As desolate a place as it is possible to imagine'. He describes many hunting trips and the hardships suffered by game during periods of continuous drought.
258 pages with 32 pages of additional books by Chapman & Hall at back some of which are uncut; tinted lithographic frontispiece of Zulu warrior, 3 tinted lithographic plates. Original green boards with gilt vignette of a buck and title on upper cover and gilt title on spine; glue residue from reinforcement on spine, corners are slightly bumped but covers are in surprisingly good condition considering age. Very slight foxing on new endpapers.
