Vandeleur, a highly decorated officer in the Scots Guards, participated in the Unyoro Expedition in 1895, the Niger Expedition in 1897, and served with the Egyptian Army in the Soudan expedition of 1898. He was awarded a grant from the Royal Geographical Society for his valuable work surveying more than 2000 miles of territory in East Africa and the Niger district. He was killed in 1901 when 250 Boers fired on his train.
