Methuen, London, 1898. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Bound in green cloth with clear title to spine and gold blocked image of three native soldiers to front board. XXV11/320pp+40pp Methuen's List for November 1897. With B/W photo of Author as frontis protected by Tissue Guard, Introduction by Sir George Goldie. Maps as follows: The Nile Valley, Uganda, Unyoro and the Upper Nile (Large coloured folding map with two inch closed tear to blank margin only), Territories of Royal Niger Company (B/W folding Map), and The Nupe Country (Large coloured folding map). 15 illustrations, in total, as well as the maps, as called for. Some creasing to cloth on the front board.

Vandeleur, a highly decorated officer in the Scots Guards, participated in the Unyoro Expedition in 1895, the Niger Expedition in 1897, and served with the Egyptian Army in the Soudan expedition of 1898. He was awarded a grant from the Royal Geographical Society for his valuable work surveying more than 2000 miles of territory in East Africa and the Niger district. He was killed in 1901 when 250 Boers fired on his train.
