Prior (1845-1910) became one of England's best known illustrators, working for the ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS. He had the ability to draw quickly and accurately and it became apparent to his employers that he did not shirk from joining troops on the frontline and often sketched whilst under fire. He covered the Ashanti, Russo-Turkish, Zulu and First Boer Wars. He also joined the expedition down the Nile under Kitchener. He returned to Southern Africa and covered the Jameson Raid, the Matabele Uprising and the South African War, 1899-1902, where he was besieged in Ladysmith. He went on the Somaliland Expedition of 1903 and finally covered the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905.
