Two certificates appointment issued by Governor and Commander in Chief of the Fort and Garrison of Fort St. George, and Town of Madraspatnam, and of all the Forces which are, or shall be Employed for the Service of the United Company of Merchants of England, trading to the East Indies, in the said Fort, Garrison, and Town, and President of the Council of FORT SAINT GEORGE, and the rest of the Council thereof.

The first appointing him Ensign of Infantry on the Eighteenth Day of April, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy Six, and the second appointing him Lieutenant of Infantry on the Twenty Ninth Day of November, One Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety Seven.
Printed in black on thick parchment with an embossed seal attached.
The hand lettering is faded and indistinct and with some dust soiling and staining.

The East India Company become the United Company of Merchants of Merchants of England Trading to the East Indies in 1708 when it was granted a Royal Charter. Fort St George, (later Madras and now called Chennai) was constructed in 1644 to protect and promoted the Company\'s trading activities.
