Translated from the original Sesuto by F.H. Dutton, this is an early black novel, reprinted many times in translation in numerous languages. The author, born c. 1875 and who died in 1948, was the greatest of the group of authors who flourished in the early part of the century in Southern Africa. He wrote in Sesuto for the Morija mission. This novel is the first of many works of the literature of South Africa which takes the great Zulu leader, king and emperor Chaka as its subject. This novel is a 'psychological study of the nature of repudiation. Human passion; uncontrolled and uncontrollable ambition leading to the moral destruction of the character and inevitable punishment'. T38.
