Hardcover Quarto bound in blue-grey cloth boards and has 403 uncut pages. Black decoration design with gilt titles on the front board and to the spine. Head/heal and corners are bumped and have some rubbing along the edges, some marks on the front/back boards.

The book consist of a frontispiece (portrait of Chauncy Maples & his printed signature below it) with tissue guard, one black and white illustration and a fold-out map of East Central Africa at the back (some small tears along the map).

Ex-libris on the front pastedown, offsetting on the half-title page/back end-paper, and a bit of foxing throughout. Both the book and binding are in very good condition.

In this sketch of my brother’s life and collection of his letters, I have striven to be brief, for the breathless end of the nineteenth century seems more than ever to call for brevity, not only as the soul of wit, but of all things.

Therefore, though with regret, I have omitted all extracts from my brother’s earlier letters, and have confined them strictly to the African period, which, however, comprised nearly all his manhood.

It is possible that this volume may be followed later on by one consisting entirely of his own writings. The diary of his journey to Meto, for instance, a journey merely mentioned in this book, is full of interest for the student of African travel.
