2 volumes. The Checklist comprises 112 pages and the Handbook 200 pages + 4 unnumbered pages to complete the index, both are simply bound in red cloth covered boards, the only titling being Sim 1-2 on the back of the Handbook, the text is printed in mauve coloured ink by the 'spirit duplicating' method according to Kerkham (Andrew) Southern African Botanical Literature 1600-1988), each is numbered Copy no. 19 in ink on the front paste down end paper, the Checklist bears a presentation inscription: Sydney Garside with compliments from F.R. Sim on the front free end paper, the bindings are faded particularly on the backs but the contents are remarkably fresh taking into account the method of printing and are free from staining or foxing.
In an insert pasted on the front free end paper Sim apologises for the delay in the printing of the Handbook, which was issued in July 1916 and expected to be completed in ten parts (see title page). It seems that only two parts of the Handbook were produced as it numbers 200 pages, but in fact there is no indication of a division, so it appears that Sim altered his plans and issued only one volume. No other parts were produced. There is no indication as to the size of the edition but the numbers which could be produced by Spirit Duplicating would have been very limited - this set being numbered 19 and it is likely that not many more copies were produced. The Handbook was expanded into 'The Bryophyta of South Africa' which was published in the 'Transactions of the Royal Society of South Africa' in 1926.
