One of the most powerful images issued by Currier and Ives during the Civil War, a graphic depiction of the destructive final days of the Confederacy. This example has been crudely trimmed and pasted to the inside cover of a 19th-century account book, where it is joined by a 1916 election campaign broadside. The where, the why, and even the who are unknown, but the what is plain enough.
Hand-colored lithograph; note cracks and chips along top edge.
Dimensions: Image: 12 1/8 x 9 1/2 inches, cut roughly along the print’s borders, retaining the full caption. We have not attempted to remove the print.
Sold as it came to us nearly 2 decades ago. Certainly an original colored lithograph, not a modern reprint. Cover is about 17 1/2 inches tall by 14 inches, not including the cloth spine. Lower corner of board cracked.
