Limited to 1000 copies, this is no. 397. Frank Connock Publication, No 1. Total 36pp. including index, followed by 24 colour plates and 1 black and white plate. Text stitched, plates unbound as issued. Plates all in good condition with some spotting, particularly on the first few plates. The end-papers also have some foxing; blue folding case is rubbed and slightly discoloured. The top ribbon to enclose the case is missing a strand, others are intact.

Hendrik Claudius was a collector of medicinal plants and came to the Cape in 1682. He was employed in the service of the Dutch East India Company and made sketches of unusual plant and animal life.
