This is a rebound copy of a scarce book in almost pristine condition. There are one, or two small patches of foxing and finger smudging. Compendiums are not often found in such good condition.
The demand for this book was very strong in 1877. The first publishing in two parts, five batch bindings and an issue were produced in one year! Theal contemplated publishing the third edition in parts of about eighty pages each and requested the Colonial Secretary to solicit the Governor's sanction, in terms of Section 2 of Act 9 of 1874, for these parts to be conveyed in the post at one penny each. He eventually abandoned the idea. (1)
