Bolus paid for the publication of this work himself. The plates were lithographed on stone, adding considerably to the expense. Only 400 sets were published of which half were sold to the public. Volume 1, which is sometimes found bound in two separate parts, is scarce. The Bolus Herbarium held stock of volumes 2 and 3 for many years and Mrs Bolus before her death was known to have given copies to deserving botanists and students.
