Cathcart was appointed Governor of the Cape and took over command of the army from Sir Harry Smith in 1852 and fought in the war against Sandile on the eastern Cape frontier & subsequently against Moshesh in Basutoland & eastern Free State. He gives full details of military action & there are some excellent maps. Inscribed on the title-page to [CAPT.] T.W. GOODRICH, C[APE] M[OUNTED] RIFLEMAN from LADY GEORGINA CATHCART, 1857. Goodrich is mentioned on page 353 of the text. George Cathcart was killed in the Crimea in 1854 and this book was inscribed by his wife to one of his companions on the eastern frontier of the Cape. Contemporary full crimson morocco, gilt emblem on front cover, all edges gilt. Pp. xiv,401, 7 maps (2 colour, 5 folding). MENDELSSOHN, 1/310; HOSKEN, p. 44. The book has been neatly recased, with spine restored at head & foot, hinges restored internally, spine darkened, book-plates of E.A. Maund & Maurice Green on front end-paper & paste-down, some foxing. An attractive copy.
