First American edition, early state with Errata corrections for vol. 1, bound without preliminary adverts. Some rubbing to cloth, with minor fraying at spine tips, with tear at upper end of vol. 1's rear joint (see images) and slightly bumped corners; small stain at center of cover of vol. 2; tiny hole noted at lower joint of v. 2. . Hinges are tight. A very good set.

vi, 409 + [2 ad] pp.; v, [3], 436 + [12] ad pp. (8vo) ; 7¾x4¾", original cloth, spine lettered in gilt, panels stamped in black. Issued the same year in which his first English edition was published.
