In 1898 the "Valdavia" ship of exploration visited Cape Town where Marloth was asked to describe the phytography of the Cape. His manuscript was published by the German Government under the general title 'Wissenschaftliche Ergebnisse der Deutschen Tiefsee-Expedition auf dem dampfer "Valdavia" 1898-1899.' Marloth's work was published as its third part.
Gunn & Codd: Botanical Exploration of Southern Africa, pages 244-5. 'Marloth's monumental work "Das Kapland" appeared in 1908. In recognition of his major contribution the German Government awarded him the Imperial Order of the Red Eagle and the Prussian title of Professor.'
