xxxi + 640 pages, illustrated throughout with reproductions of all the woodcuts from the original edition, full faux vellum titled in black on the spine – cracking at the top and bottom of the upper joint and with some loss at the head of the spine, worm holes at the bottom corners of both boards which also affect a few of the preliminary and final pages, edges uncut, light foxing throughout. Presentation inscription on the front free endpaper, bookplate of ‘Vergenoeg’ – the library of Alpheus Fuller Williams – on the front paste-down endpaper.
The inscription reads, ‘To Gardner F. Williams, Esq, With Compliments of H.C. Hoover.’
Herbert Hoover, a trained mining engineer, was president of the United States from 1929 – 1933. His wife, Lou Henry Hoover was a geologist and Latinist. This edition was privately published for the Hoovers, the size of the edition is unknown.
