Manuscript document of 4 pages embossed with the VOC stamp to the value of 2 Rix dollars on the front page. The seal of the VOC in good condition appears on the third page, a ship in full sail with the wording CDGHoop (Cabo de Goede Hoop) underneath it. The document has been folded into four, the final page bears a short title. There is some light staining and fraying along the edges. Overall in very good condition.

The document details the transfer of land between Elizabeth Artooijs, the widow of Briaan (sic) Henning, and the farmer Daniel Van Rheenen. This land was situated in the Plattekloof area of the Tygerbergen and was 360 morgen in size. The property was first registered on 24 January 1699, then transferred on 7 May 1756. The cost of the property was 4 850 guilders, according to the DEIC evaluation. There appears to have been a further cost of 1618 guilders added to this initial price. It is signed by a member of the Committee and Elizabeth Artooijs. The signature at the top of the document may be attributed to Sergius Swellengrebel, who was cousin to the Governor, Hendril Swellengrebel. ‘He arrived in Table Bay in July 1712 as a soldier in the service of the DEIC. He remained at the Cape for 10 years before returning to Europe. Later he re-entered the service of the Company and did well, for in 1750 he became senior merchant and deputy governor the Cape and took his seat on the Council of Policy and the Council of Justice. He died in December 1760 and was buried at the Groote Kerk.’ from Dictionary of South African Biography, Volume 2 page 727.
